The Fool is often thought to represent both the beginning and the end of the Tarot deck. All things begin and end in the Fool's dance. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that the Fool should be considered as representing that which lies beyond our concepts of 'beginning' and 'ending.' Of course, that which lies beyond our normal conceptual bounds cannot be captured easily (if at all) in normal, everyday language. Symbols are needed instead. Note how in the Rider-Waite depiction the Fool appears to be standing on the edge of a cliff. This, to me, represents the fact that the Fool's world exists either outside of our own conceptual bounds, or on the very far margins of it.
